Car audio, explained

Start with what you want to hear, then choose the right combination of equipment.

Speakers: the foundation of the system

Factory speakers and their installation can limit clarity, detail and bass. A replacement needs to suit the available mounting space, the equipment powering it and the sound you want. Materials, cone design and installation all matter; choosing only by the largest advertised wattage misses much of the picture.

Coaxial speakers combine a woofer and tweeter in one assembly. They can provide a straightforward upgrade in suitable factory positions. Component sets separate the woofer and tweeter, often using an external crossover, allowing more control over positioning and the sound stage. A three-way set adds a dedicated midrange driver.

Cone materials such as polypropylene, glass fibre and other composites affect stiffness, weight and damping. Silk and metal tweeters have different designs and characteristics. The complete speaker design and tuning determine the result; no material is automatically best for every listener.

Crossovers divide the frequency range between the drivers. Secure mounting, sealing around the speaker and appropriate door treatment help the new equipment perform properly.

Subwoofers: depth, impact and balance

A subwoofer handles the low notes that smaller door speakers struggle to reproduce. It can make music sound fuller at everyday listening levels, without the system needing to be excessively loud. With suitable crossover settings, the other speakers can concentrate on the midrange and treble.

An active subwoofer includes its own amplifier. Compact and under-seat designs can add bass while preserving usable space. A passive subwoofer needs a separate amplifier, chosen to suit its impedance, power requirements and enclosure.

A sealed enclosure generally offers a compact route to controlled bass. A correctly designed ported enclosure can provide greater output in its intended frequency range. We choose the enclosure around the specific driver, vehicle, space and listening preferences. Custom installations can integrate the enclosure into the vehicle rather than simply placing a large box in the boot.

Amplifiers: match the power to the equipment

An amplifier supplies the electrical power for the speakers or subwoofer. Suitable power, channel layout, gain settings and protection help deliver clean sound. An amplifier cannot prevent distortion caused by clipping, incorrect setup or an unsuitable source signal.

A conventional amplifier adds power without the detailed tuning facilities of a DSP amplifier. It can suit a straightforward speaker or bass upgrade. DSP amplifiers combine amplification with digital signal processing, giving the installer more control over a complete system.

We assess the source signal, speaker impedance, continuous power requirements and available installation space. A vehicle with a factory amplifier may need additional integration equipment before an aftermarket amplifier can be installed correctly.

DSP: tune the system to your vehicle

A digital signal processor can be a separate unit or built into an amplifier. It provides tools to shape the signal before it reaches the speakers. The benefit comes from careful setup for the vehicle and listening position.

Time alignment adjusts the timing of different speakers to improve the apparent position of voices and instruments. Parametric equalisation can reduce unwanted peaks and shape the frequency balance. Active crossovers direct appropriate frequency ranges to each speaker, while bass management helps the subwoofer blend with the rest of the system.

A DSP is especially useful when building a more capable system or working with complex factory audio. It is configured for the installed equipment; it is not simply a box that guarantees better sound without measurement and tuning.

Controllers: useful adjustments within reach

A compatible controller can provide convenient master volume, subwoofer-level adjustment or switching between saved sound profiles. The available functions depend on the processor and controller.

This can be useful when keeping the original stereo or using different audio sources. We demonstrate the controls at handover and agree sensible everyday settings. Detailed adjustments should be made while safely parked.

Sound treatment: control vibration around the speakers

Door and panel treatment can reduce resonance, vibration and rattles that otherwise colour the sound. Suitable sealing and mounting help improve bass and midrange performance. Different materials address panel vibration, sound absorption and noise transmission; their positions and application matter.

Entry-level door sound treatment is included with our speaker upgrades. Enhanced three-layer treatment is available for customers wanting more extensive work. We can also discuss suitable treatment for floors, roofs and wheel arches as part of a larger installation.

Treatment can improve listening comfort and reduce some unwanted noise, but cannot remove every source of road or engine noise. We plan it alongside the equipment rather than treating it as a replacement for a properly matched system.

Factory and premium systems: retain what you need

Systems carrying names such as Bose, Bang & Olufsen, Harman Kardon, Bowers & Wilkins or Meridian can have vehicle-specific amplifiers, equalisation and connections. The badge alone does not identify the wiring or integration method.

A factory system may limit adjustment or use processing intended for its original speakers. Aftermarket speakers, amplification, DSP and subwoofers provide other routes to better sound, but the components must work with the original signal and vehicle electronics.

Where possible we retain the original dashboard appearance and the functions you need. We check the make, model, year and factory sound system before quoting for interfaces, replacement equipment or a complete upgrade.

Lossless and high-resolution music

The recording and playback source are part of the system. MP3 and other lossy formats discard some information to reduce file size. Lossless formats such as FLAC and ALAC preserve the encoded audio without that loss; WAV can contain uncompressed audio. Lossless and high resolution are different properties, so the file specification and original recording still matter.

For suitable higher-quality playback, the phone or player, head unit, connection and DSP all need to support the intended format. The existing guide discusses equipment such as Audison Bit processors and Helix DSP; exact format support varies by model and is checked before choosing.

Good speakers, amplification and tuning can reveal more of a recording, but buying a high-resolution-capable component alone does not improve a poor recording or guarantee a particular result.

A complete installation and handover

We match speakers, amplification, bass, source integration and sound treatment to your vehicle, music and budget. The fitting includes secure mounting, appropriate wiring and protection, system setup and a demonstration at handover.

South Devon Car Audio is part of the Four Masters network. Hertz and Audison systems supplied and installed by us include a five-year parts and labour warranty through the programme. We provide complete supply-and-fitting installations rather than selling audio components as DIY parts.

Visit by appointment to discuss the options and demonstration equipment. Tell us your registration, existing system, preferred music and what you would like to improve. We can plan a speaker upgrade, extra bass or a full system and explain the complete fitting quote.
