How cars are Stolen

Take a look below at just some of the ways vehicles are being stolen in the UK.

Vehicle theft can involve stolen keys, unauthorised key programming, keyless relay attacks or physical entry. The risks vary by vehicle, so an older video or example should not be treated as proof that every model is vulnerable. This guide explains the main differences and how additional security can help. For advice on your car, van or motorhome, contact our Newton Abbot workshop with its make, model and year.

Pandora systems provide a choice of alarm and immobiliser features, with connected tracking available on selected models. South Devon Vehicle Security supplies and installs these systems to suit individual vehicles. We explain what your chosen package includes, how it works and any subscription requirements. An alarm, immobiliser and tracker serve different purposes: detecting specified triggers, restricting unauthorised starting and helping locate a vehicle. We can discuss these options without promising that any system prevents every theft.

Understanding diagnostic-port security

Diagnostic-port security and unauthorised key programming

The OBD diagnostic port allows technicians to communicate with a vehicle’s electronic systems. Security arrangements vary by make, model and year. On some vehicles, unauthorised access can be used as part of a theft attempt; this does not mean every diagnostic reader can create a working key.

Ask your vehicle dealer about relevant security updates and suitable protection for your particular model. If you are considering additional security, tell us what is already fitted and any requirements from your insurer. We can explain compatible alarm and immobiliser options and confirm the proposed installation before you book.

Choosing additional vehicle security

We can help you choose additional security to suit your vehicle. An alarm, immobiliser and tracker perform different jobs, and the fitted specification matters. Ask us to explain which features are included in your quote; do not assume every Pandora package includes the same accessories or diagnostic-port protection.

Separate engine immobilisation

We fit immobiliser systems that require their own authorisation before the vehicle can be started. The method depends on the chosen system and installation. At handover, we explain normal use, how to manage authorised servicing and what to do if a tag or remote is lost. Keep the instructions and emergency details secure.

Security advice for your specific vehicle

With security systems varying between models and years, it is better to check your own vehicle than rely on a general claim about every manufacturer. Ask your dealer about available security updates and contact us with the make, model and year for installation advice. We confirm compatibility before recommending a package.

A practical guide to keyless security

When choosing extra security, start by finding out whether your vehicle has passive keyless entry, push-button start or a conventional remote key. These are different features. Tell us how you use and park the vehicle, and whether your insurer has specified an alarm, immobiliser or tracker.

What is relay theft?

With relay theft, equipment makes a compatible keyless vehicle believe its genuine key is nearby. The key may still be inside the owner’s home. This is different from making a new key, and it does not mean every keyless vehicle has the same vulnerability. Check the security advice for your exact model.

But a keyless-entry system is not the same as a remote that needs a button press to unlock the doors. Ask your dealer if you are unsure which system your vehicle uses.

Many owners ask whether their existing alarm is enough. We can explain how a separate immobiliser, alarm sensors or a tracker would complement it, without promising that any single product makes theft impossible.

Security needs vary with the vehicle and its use. When requesting a quote, mention overnight parking, regular travel, any tools or equipment carried, and your insurer’s requirements. This helps us discuss a suitable installation.

How can you reduce keyless theft risk?

The main and spare keys should be stored away from the vehicle and out of sight. A signal-blocking pouch can help with relay theft; test it periodically. If your key supports it, check the manufacturer’s instructions for switching off its wireless function when not needed.

Remember to check that the vehicle has actually locked before walking away. Close windows and the sunroof, and remove valuables from view. A remote that does not respond can have several causes, so do not assume a failed button press proves that a theft attempt is taking place.

How can physical security help?

When parking, consider a well-lit, busy location and an appropriate tested steering-wheel or other physical lock. These measures can complement electronic security. An alarm detects specified triggers, an immobiliser helps prevent starting, and tracking can assist recovery. Choose features that suit your vehicle and normal routine.

How can Pandora add protection?

Pandora offers immobiliser and alarm systems, with tracking, phone connectivity and remote controls available on selected models. We confirm the system and accessories suitable for your vehicle, explain the controls and provide an installation handover. Connected features depend on coverage, the fitted equipment and any required subscription.

Why discuss a Pandora installation with us?

Pandora packages can be tailored to different vehicles, but no alarm can guarantee protection against every theft. Contact South Devon Vehicle Security in Newton Abbot to discuss your car, van, camper or motorhome. Tell us any insurer requirements before booking so we can confirm the appropriate system and fitted price.
